An example of parallel computing problem solving is using parallel computing to solve maximum likelihood estimation problems. The information that i found about this topic was a published article by CHRISTOPHER A. SWANN Department of Economics, SUNY-Stony Brook, Stony Brook, NY 11794, U.S.A.; In this article Christopher takes a five choice multinomial logit model - and demonstrates one way to solve it using the MPI message passing library. The interesting thing about this is not so much the actual problem that he solves with parallel computing, but they way that he uses this problem that has been solved as a tool to introduce other people into the possibilities of parallel computing. The programming language that he used is fortran, which i also thought was an interesting tid-bit, as fortran is becoming less and less widely used.
